In fact, it is the most-visited national park, attracting more than 10 million visitors each year. You should definitely come see this beautiful place for yourself when you stay at one of our cabins. If you need recommendations on where to go, we’ve got you covered. Explore this list of 3 popular places in Great Smoky Mountains National Park:
1. Cades Cove
Cades Cove is the most-visited area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, for it receives an estimated 5 million visitors each year. Cades Cove is known for its rich history, as the area was once home to a thriving population of settlers in the 1800’s. You can see the historical structures left behind, one of which is the John Oliver Cabin. It is believed to be the oldest human structures in the park. Along with the rustic historical structures, you can also see beautiful natural scenery. For example, there is a breathtaking 20-foot waterfall on the Abrams Falls Trail. You can also explore the area by traveling on Cades Cove Loop Road in your vehicle. This 11-mile, one way scenic drive is open to visitors year-round! It is a great alternative way to see everything for those who may not enjoy hiking.
2. Clingmans Dome
If you’re looking for a great place to see gorgeous views in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, head to Clingmans Dome! It is the highest point in the park and in Tennessee overall. The observation tower was added in 1959. When you stand in it, you can see views that stretch for over 100 miles on a clear day. It is important to note that while the observation tower is open year-round, Clingmans Dome Road closes seasonally in early December through late March. This is done to keep visitors safe from the hazardous conditions created by snow and ice. Whenever you visit Clingmans Dome, it is important to note that its high elevation makes the temperature 10 to 20 degrees colder. Be sure to wear a jacket and dress in layers, especially if you come during the colder months.
3. Elkmont
Elkmont is another popular area on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It has a lot of beautiful scenery just like the rest of the area, but it is well-known for its unique history. Elkmont was first settled in the 1840’s and later became a resort community. When the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established, the people moved away and there were over 70 abandoned buildings. Because of this large quantity, this area was deemed a “ghost town.” A number of individuals have worked to protect Elkmont’s history. Today, over 19 of the buildings have been restored and preserved. Some of those have moved from their original locations.
